Avalanche of artists in Gstaad for Elevation 1049

Artists are running for the (Swiss) hills once again with the launch early next year of the third edition of Elevation 1049, the biennial event that takes place in and around Gstaad (3 February-19 March). The eagerly anticipated show in the snow, curated once again by the independent curator Neville Wakefield and the artist Olympia Scarry, is based on “avalanches, their power, dynamics and the unexpected”, according to a project statement. Wakefield says: “The curatorial impulse of this winter’s show is born of the unexpected and the shape-shifting interplay between form and formlessness; there is no better place than Gstaad to display these dramatic manoeuvres.” Large-scale, site-specific sculptures will be dotted around the Swiss mountains, while sound installations and performances will take place during the launch weekend in locations such as “contained interior spaces, ranging from a barn to the Palace Hotel to the bunkers of the secret army”. Participating artists include Allora & Calzadilla, Douglas Gordon, Sarah Morris and Tatiana Trouvé.  Sponsors include the Luma Foundation, the philanthropic organisation founded by the Swiss contemporary collector Maja Hoffmann.
