Rich in venues, Beijing will soon have a dedicated event

The inaugural Gallery Weekend Beijing will run from 17 to 19 March, just ahead of Art Basel in Hong Kong. As we went to press, the 15 galleries and four non-profit participants included Galleria Continua, Pace Beijing, Magician Space and M Woods. The project grew out of discussions initiated last summer, says its founder, Thomas Eller. “Beijing has everything—a lot of good artists, galleries and museums—except a reason to go there,” says Eller, the president of bilingual Chinese art magazine Randian. “Our raison d’être at Gallery Weekend Beijing is to prepare a stage and switch on the lights for people to see what’s going on here.”
