The Met adds Native American art to its American wing

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York will for the first time show Native American art alongside colonial portraits and furniture in its American wing. The Met’s long-time patrons Charles and Valerie Diker have promised the museum 91 works, dating from the second to the early 20th century, from their collection. The gift joins 20 works donated by the couple over the past two decades. By installing them in the American wing, the Met aims to “offer a much richer history of the art of North America, one that will include critical perspectives on our past and represent diverse and enduring native artistic traditions”, says Carrie Rebora Barratt, the deputy director for collections and administration. An exhibition of more than 100 works from the Diker collection is due to open at the museum in autumn 2018.
