Franko B creates sculpture to highlight Syrian refugees’ plight

Move over, Ai Weiwei: an under-the-radar exhibition at the Freud Museum in London (until 16 July) draws attention to the plight of Middle Eastern refugees. The Milan-born conceptual artist Franko B has created a sculpture of a dead child refugee presumed to be from Syria; the arresting piece, titled Sleeping Beauty (2016), is hand-carved in marble, using traditional methods in the style of the Baroque sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini. “Everyone is a refugee, including those who are on the fringes of society, marginalised by their sexuality or ethnicity, or anyone with baggage created through the structures of dominant Western capitalist culture,” the artist tells The Art Newspaper. The show is backed by A/Political, a London-based non-profit organisation that collaborates with socio-political artists.
