The Collective Design fair, which presents 20th- and 21st-century design and decorative arts, announced that its 2018 edition will be moved from May to March, to coincide with the Armory Show.
“By joining Armory Arts Week in March, we can expand our platform in a larger venue, engage a broader audience of art collectors, and distinguish Collective as the sole design-focused event of the week,” Steven Learner, the fair’s founder, said in a statement. The sixth edition of the fair, 9-11 March (VIP preview 8 March), will trade its former venue of Skylight Clarkson Sq. for the neighbouring Skyling Clarkson North.
Since its inception in 2013, the fair has taken place in the first week of May alongside Frieze New York and the week of design events known as NYCxDesign; this year, The European Fine Art Fair (Tefaf)’s spring edition, focusing on modern and contemporary art and design, also joined the slate.
Collective is not alone in making the switch: the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) fair also moved to coincide with the Armory Show this year. “There is a growing sense of optimism and enthusiasm surrounding the week since NADA joined, and Collective’s recent decision only enhances this,” Benjamin Genocchio, executive director of the Armory Show, says in a statement.
2018 will also see another shake-up in Armory Arts Week: while the fair typically opens the day after the opening of the ADAA Art Show, it has pushed back its 2018 dates to open to VIPs on 7 March, while the ADAA Art Show will open to VIPs on 27 February.
