Hear them roar—tiger rugs by Anish Kapoor and Raqib Shaw fly out the door

The Tomorrow’s Tigers appeal, a selling exhibition held at Sotheby’s London last week in aid of the World Wildlife Fund, has been a roaring success. The charity initiative organised by the curatorial collective Artwise aims to raise more than £1m and double tiger numbers in the wild by 2022. “We came up with the idea of a selling exhibition inspired by The Tiger Rugs of Tibet show held at London’s Hayward Gallery in 1988,” says Susie Allen, the co-director of Artwise. Ten artists including Rose Wylie, Kiki Smith and Gary Hume submitted designs; the rugs were then handmade to order (edition of ten) by master craftsmen in India. “More than 20 rugs have already been sold or reserved, translating into £400,000 raised already against the original target goal of £1m. Rugs by Sir Anish Kapoor, Maya Lin and Raqib Shaw were the first to sell, all within hours of opening, and with sales or strong interest expressed for all ten designs,” says a statement from Artwise.
