Film buffs will savour the inaugural exhibitions at the new movie museum mecca destined to launch in Los Angeles this winter. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will open to the public on 14 December, giving movie devotees something to look forward post-pandemic. The exhibition experience of the Academy Museum will begin in the Grand Lobby of the Saban Building with the Spielberg Family Gallery, which will be free to enter. “This soaring, glass-walled gallery will serve as an introduction to the museum’s exhibitions by surrounding visitors with multiple screens featuring a rapid immersion into the history of cinema, from the Lumière brothers to present day,” a statement says. The permanent Stories of Cinema display will include galleries developed in collaboration with Academy Award-winning writer-directors Spike Lee and Pedro Almodóvar, composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, and the sound designer Ben Burtt. Other highlights include a gallery devoted to The Wizard of Oz (we all want to be a friend of Dorothy) as well as the original multi-camera rig from The Matrix, directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski. Remember, “there is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.”
