Although surveys of the iconic works by Andy Warhol are commonplace in the US and UK, this exhibition will visit many countries in Southern and Eastern Europe that may have only had access to his art through reproductions. In conjunction with the Andy Warhol Museum, in the artist’s hometown, Pittsburgh, the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) has organised a tour of twelve countries for the next year. Fifty-five works, including the essential soup cans, Marilyn Monroe and Chairman Mao pictures, will visit Hungary, Greece, Russia and Estonia this year and Slovakia, Slovenia, Latvia and Croatia in 2001. The exhibition opened in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in January and is part of the State Department’s millennium programme, which includes graduate and undergraduate fellowships and institutional links in Russia and the New Independent States.
