Berlin Andy Warhol retrospective comes to LA

The blockbuster show comes to the US via London

The Andy Warhol retrospective first seen at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin and then at Tate Modern in London opens in Los Angeles this month (25 May-18 August). The exhibition is curated by Heiner Bastian, a friend of the artist’s, and additional works have been been loaned for this stage of the tour. Warhol’s connection to Los Angeles has been emphasised by MOCA director Jeremy Strick, who points out that Warhol’s first solo exhibition—of Campbell’s Soup Can paintings—was presented in Los Angeles at the legendary Ferus Gallery in 1962, followed by Elvis Portraits in 1963 and in 1970, while the Pasadena Art Museum organised the first American retrospective exhibition to travel internationally. This will be the first major Warhol retrospective in Los Angeles for 30 years and MOCA is the only North American venue for this show.
