The Turner Prize 2002

The Tate’s £20,000 Turner Prize, awarded to a British artist under 50 for an outstanding exhibition in the past year, is to be announced on 8 December. This year’s shortlisted artists are: Liam Gillick, Fiona Banner, Catherine Yass and Keith Tyson. They are nominated for, and judged on, work exhibited in the previous twelve months and not on the work in the Turner Prize exhibition, which is designed to give the public a taste of their work. The winner is chosen by a panel chaired by the director of Tate, Nicholas Serota. This year he will be assisted by Michael Archer, critic and lecturer; Susan Ferleger Brades, Director of the Hayward Gallery, London; Alfred Pacquement, Director of the Pompidou Centre, Paris; and Greville Worthington, representative of the Patrons of New Art and a trustee of the Henry Moore Foundation. The exhibition will remain open until 5 January. Here visitors can see Keith Tyson’s doodlings on the workings of the universe as well as an ominous mechanical brain; Liam Gillick’s perspex ceiling and beach towel designs; Catherine Yass’s upside down video work; and Fiona Banner’s porn-film plots writ large in fluorescent pink.
