Road trip masterminded by Cedric Christie makes stop at Basel

Each of the twelve motorists have been assigned a vehicle restored by Christie, their route incorporating a series of art fairs

An artistic motorcade has hit town in the form of English artist Cedric Christie’s 12-car work of art which has journeyed from Shoreditch in East London and is on a Basel stopover en route for Documenta. Entitled History and driven by a motley crew which includes artist Gavin Turk, Christie himself and actor, writer and rock icon Richard Strange (who bought himself a special wig for the occasion), each vehicle represents one of the 12 Documentas, and depicts a selection of the participating artists’ names which are emblazoned, Formula One style, in logo form. Gilbert & George, for example, appear in the mode of Mastercard, Andy Warhol is in a style reminiscent of American Express and Jeff Wall’s name bears a strong similarity to Barclaycard. The convoy sets off on the final leg of its art tour from Messeplatz at 3pm today, and will remain parked at Documenta until Saturday.
