A department dedicated to Judaica (Jewish ceremonial art) will open at Pierre Bergé, the Paris- and Brussels-based auction house, in June. It launches with the sale of Isucher Ber Frydman’s collection of European pieces dating from the 17th to the 20th centuries (23 June, Paris). Frydman, who died in 1983, was born in Poland and survived the razing of the Warsaw Ghetto in 1943, when an estimated 300,000 of its Jewish residents were killed or deported to death camps. Frydman’s collection of around 150 lots is dominated by 17th- and 18th-century metalwork, including a 1777 Torah plaque (est €50,000-€60,000) showing Moses and Aaron, crafted by the silversmith Johann Ernst Braungart of Breslau (now Wroclaw in Poland).
