Frieze visitors go dotty

As many as 700 visitors to Frieze New York are now $20 richer. On Wednesday and Thursday at the fair, anyone with half an hour to spare could try their hand at painting an 8 x 8 inch black dot as part of the artist Jonathan Horowitz’s 700 Dots, a participatory work of art at Gavin Brown’s Enterprise (B38). Fair-goers found painting a dot harder than it looked: some canvases had smudges and many dots were obviously wider than 8 inches, but everyone who “tried” to follow instructions would see their painting go up on the wall. In return, they received a very dubious-looking, hand-drawn cheque from Jonathan Horowitz for $20. (The gallery did not comment on the sales price for the canvases.) The 700th and final canvas was painted by Thursday afternoon, so those looking to make back their ferry fare over the weekend will be out of luck.
