The 100th birthday of the Cuban painter Carmen Herrera is being celebrated around the world. Her work is on display in New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art, in the institution’s inaugural show (America is Hard to See, until 27 September) in its new downtown home. In London, Lisson Gallery will stage a solo presentation of her work at Frieze Masters (14-18 October). Herrera, who was born in Havana, Cuba, on 31 May 1915, lives and works in New York. She studied architecture at the University of Havana before training as an artist at the Art Students League of New York. The award-winning director Alison Klayman’s recent documentary about Herrera, The 100 Years Show, received its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada in April.
