Christie’s has hired Stanislas Gokelaere, 47, as a European consultant within its African and Oceanic art department. He will be based in Paris. A former investment banker, Gokelaere was the founder of the Luxembourg-based Art Collection Fund. Coming from a family of Modern art dealers, he has been a collector of tribal art for the past 20 years. Christie’s, Paris holds two sales of African and Oceanic art a year. On 23 June, it sold a Kota tribal sculpture for €5.5mm (est €6m-€9m), the third most expensive work of African art sold at auction. The piece had come from the collection of William Rubin, the former director of painting and sculpture at New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
