Tyburn Gallery is due to join the swelling ranks of London dealerships that exhibit and sell contemporary African art. The new gallery, which will also feature work by artists from other emerging markets, is scheduled to open on 17 September in Marylebone. “Contemporary African art is fluid in the sense that many artists from Africa were educated abroad and divide their time between different countries and continents,” says Emma Mennell, the South African-born founder of Tyburn Gallery.
The first exhibition, Broken English (until 28 October), will include works by international artists including Athi Patra-Ruga, Mohau Modisakeng, Edson Chagas and Joël Andrianomearisoa. It has been organised by the gallery’s curatorial adviser, Kim Stern, a former director of South Africa’s Goodman Gallery.
