Poor visitor numbers forces Madrid museum to close within its first year

The Museo Carlos de Amberes in Madrid closed its doors in August after just nine months due to low visitor numbers. The Fundación Carlos de Amberes launched the museum in November 2014 inside its long-time home, a 19th-century building near Madrid’s Golden Mile of museums. Spain’s King Philip VI presided over the opening ceremony. The majority of the 30 works in the inaugural exhibition of Dutch and Flemish Old Master paintings were on loan from institutions including the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp and the Museo Nacional del Prado. A spokesman for the Fundación Carlos de Amberes could not be reached for comment.
