Big show for Oldenburg's mini works

Paula Cooper Gallery will stage an ambitious show of works by Claes Oldenburg, who normally exhibits with Pace gallery. Things Around The House, which opens tomorrow (7 November) will showcase domestic works from the Pop artist’s career, including miniatures of monumental works, which new rooms will be built to display. This is not the artist’s first show with Paula Cooper but it is his most significant, says gallery director Steve Henry. The gallery’s relationship with Oldenburg dates back to the 1970s, when Cooper became close with Oldenburg’s wife and collaborator Coosje van Bruggen, who died in 2009. The two artists were in numerous group shows at the gallery and one co-headlined exhibition in 2004. Oldenburg also showed solo drawings there in 2002. Henry says: “We were very keen to do a show, so I think that was one deciding factor for him. I also think he really loves our space.” A spokeswoman for Pace says that the gallery continues to represent the artist. The exhibition is on show until 12 December.
