The UK branch of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (Icomos) released the Cultural Heritage Manifesto during its one-day Mainstreaming Cultural Heritage conference in London in late October. The event was staged to mark the group’s 50th anniversary. The declaration calls for heritage to be “embedded in all aspects of human activity and sustainable development” and to be viewed as a major economic activity. In the keynote address, Prince Karim Aga Khan said that heritage projects should be seen as a key component of development. Heritage is like a trampoline, he said, “propelling the quality of everyday life”.
