The photojournalist Peter Turnley, who is the first American to have a solo show at Havana’s Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes since the Cuban Revolution, is due to speak at the Miami Street Photography Festival today. He is also one of its judges. A regular visitor to Cuba, Turnley first went in 1989, when he covered a historic meeting between Cuba’s then president Fidel Castro and Mikhail Gorbachev, the president of the USSR—one of many assignments for Newsweek magazine. He will talk about his career and the show (Moments of the Human Condition, until 15 February 2016) and will sign his new book, Cuba: a Grace of Spirit. To raise money for the victims of November’s terrorist attacks in Paris, Turnley is offering prints of two images of the city, where he once worked as Robert Doisneau’s assistant. The sale ends at midnight.
