Time travellers welcome at Helsinki museum

Time travel is not just for sci-fi films anymore. Visitors to the Helsinki City Museum in Finland will be able to experience the past thanks to a “time machine” developed by the Finnish software company Futurice. The immersive installation uses virtual reality headsets to take visitors on a journey through the history of the city via the museum’s collection of 400,000 objects and one million images. The project is part of a larger trend among institutions to create immersive experiences using technology, says Risto Sarvas, the creative director of Futurice. The time machine—still in its prototype phase—is to be unveiled in May 2016 when the museum reopens in a new complex in the centre of Helsinki.
