New York’s first comprehensive cultural plan is beginning to shape up. The city council is hiring a consultant to set out how to incorporate culture into the community better, broaden its role in economic development and improve arts education. The bill, which was introduced in 2013, follows the example of other US cities such as Chicago and Houston. The chosen applicant, who will take up their position by 1 August, will “actively engage with the public to seek input and research the plan”, says a council spokesman. The final proposal for the cultural plan is due by 1 July 2017.
