A gallery for Modern and contemporary art is due to open in February at the University of Cambridge’s Downing College. The Heong Gallery, primarily funded by alumnus Alwyn Heong, is housed in former stables converted by the firm Caruso St John. The inaugural show presents work from the collection of Alan Bowness, the former director of the Tate Gallery and the Henry Moore Foundation, who studied at Downing in the 1950s. Generation Painting, 1955-65, unites rarely seen works by British artists including Patrick Heron and Peter Lanyon (6 February-22 May).
