The Istanbul art scene has suffered another blow with the announcement that the video art fair, Moving Image, will not go ahead this year. The third edition was due to open this autumn (22-25 September) at the city’s Haliç Congress Centre on the banks of the Golden Horn.
The move follows the decision by the organisers of Art International to postpone this year’s edition, saying that security issues had played a part. The contemporary art fair was scheduled to coincide with Moving Image Istanbul at the same venue.
Edward Winkleman and Murat Orozobekov, the co-founders of Moving Image, say in a statement: "With news of the postponement of Art International, and our close relationship with them and the Haliç Congress Centre, we don't believe it makes sense for us to attempt to present Moving Image on its own.”
The pair stress that Moving Image is a niche satellite fair, adding: “We have an open dialogue with the great team at Art International and are already making plans for a fantastic new edition in 2017.” Next year’s fair will also coincide with the 15th Istanbul Biennial co-organised by the artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset.
Moving Image, which launched in New York in 2011, focuses on single-channel videos, video sculptures, and large-scale video installations.
