The Buck stopped here

The Buck stopped here is a blog by our contemporary art correspondent Louisa Buck covering the hottest events and must-see exhibitions in London and beyond

The US singer, poet and artist Patti Smith, who makes many appearances in an exhibition of Annie Leibovitz’s early photographs at Hauser & Wirth’s Los Angeles outpost (until 14 April), was in fine voice last night at a private gig to salute her photographer friend. Accompanied by long-time collaborator Lenny Kaye on guitar and her daughter Jesse Paris Smith on piano, Patti belted out many of her classics, and declared Annie’s H&W show to be “like going through my own life and my own history”. She received an especially loud cheer from an enthusiastic crowd, which included the UK photographer and film-maker Sam Taylor-Johnson and her actor husband Aaron as well as Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA), Los Angeles director Klaus Biesenbach, when she tweaked her lyrics to declaim: “Because the Night belongs to … Annie!” Which last night, indeed it did.
