While Hauser & Wirth’s stand of Charles Gaines beautiful Numbers and Trees series sold out at the fair’s on opening day, editions of a print by the artist, based on Frederick Douglass’s 1876 speech at the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial, are still available—and will help fund an ambitious project produced by Creative Time later this year. By the end of the day on 19 May, sales of the editions had already raised $700,000 toward the project.

Installed on Governor’s Island, the immersive sculpture Moving Chains will take the form of a “long wooden hull that supports ten large, revolving mooring chains connected to pulley systems”, according to grant-maker Via Art, which is supporting the project. “Passers-by can enter the sculpture’s structure from the riverside to experience the sights and sounds of its rumbling metal.”

Gaines will also organise a series of operatic performances in Times Square as part of the project, which then travels to Cincinnati, Ohio and the Covington riverfront in Kentucky.
