British Museum ends the year as the butt of the joke

The annual Christmas cracker joke competition by the British TV channel Gold took a swipe at the theft scandal that rocked the institution

The British Museum probably thought its 2023 couldn’t get any worse after sparking a diplomatic incident, having thousands of items from its collection stolen and getting into trouble for using a translator’s work without permission.

But it wasn’t counting on the annual Christmas cracker joke competition organised by British TV channel Gold. They asked members of the public to submit their original (and mostly terrible) gags, which were then voted on by 2,000 people.

The winning entry by Chris Douch skewered the august institution’s reputation for, ahem, holding on to things that might not belong to them. “Did you hear about the Christmas cake on display in the British Museum? It was Stollen.”

The institution is pudding up with a lot these days but we think a cracker of a joke is good for its elf. And no, we are not losing our marbles, unlike the British Museum...
