The Thessaloniki biennial opens this month under severe economic strain. The show, titled Imagined Homes (30 September-14 January 2018), has been organised with just 20% of the funding that was available to the three previous editions. The exhibition will open “despite being tested by the current socio-political conditions of the country and the downsizing of available financial resources”, says the curator, Syrago Tsiara. Diasporas, homelands and cultural assimilation are the major themes this year. Around 75 international artists will show in four venues.
