Hopi tribe calls for halt to Paris artefact auction

The Hopi tribe of Native Americans based in Arizona, has launched a campaign to halt an auction of native religious objects due to take place at Drouot in Paris on 1 June. As we went to press, at least 20 Hopi artefacts had been consigned to the 136-lot sale organised by Eve auction house. In a statement, Herman Honanie, the chairman of the Hopi Tribal Council, said: “Hopi is absolute in its stance that these auctions must cease. We call on all local, state and federal agencies to aid our efforts in recovering our sacred katsina friends [sacred figures].” Eve auction house declined to comment.
