It will include displays of photographs and posters, pieces of barbed wire, tools and clothes from the Gulags

A museum of Communism is to open in the Palace of Culture in Warsaw, a huge building constructed under orders from Stalin in 1955. In December last year, the mayor of Warsaw, Lech Kacynski, signed an agreement with the Fondation Socland, an organisation which collects documents and artefacts from Communist-era Poland, and with the architect Czeslaw Bielecki, who is to design the new museum. It will include displays of photographs and posters, pieces of barbed wire, tools and clothes from the Gulags. Other artefacts include a chair used by Poland’s secret police to interrogate suspects and film footage of Stalin and Lenin. A date has not been set for its opening and the precise funding details are still under discussion.
