Design Miami/Basel 2008 will look to the future of design

The fair will stray from the well-known to focus on the search for the next big thing

Design Miami returns to Basel (2-5 June) for a second year beneath the Modernist dome of the Markthalle. Although the number of galleries has increased from 22 to 29, a clutch of major names will not be represented this year. Barry Friedman from New York, Didier Krzentowski of Galerie Kreo (Paris) and London’s David Gill will all stay at home this June.

The emphasis of the exhibits is on highly prized vintage pieces and limited-edition contemporary design. But press attention will focus equally on the ‘Designer of the Future’ event, where new work by London-based Max Lamb, Julia Lohmann, Martino Gamper, and Munich and Sweden-based partnership Reed Kramm and Clemens Weisshaar will be shown.

Gamper must feel like he’s travelling back and forth in time, since this particular ‘designer of the future’ has been making the sort of prices and impact recently that suggest he’s very much of the present, with a highly convincing past.
