Dubai’s ongoing quest to develop into a leading arts hub gathers pace with the launch of a major photography exhibition in the emirate this spring (16-19 March). The Dubai Photo Exhibition, which will be held in a purpose-built “temporary museum”, will include hundreds of images, says an event spokesman.

“For the inaugural edition in 2016, Dubai Photo Exhibition will present a showcase of museum quality international works, which will be held in the Dubai Design District (d3), and supported by the World Photography Organisation,” the organisers say in a statement.

The exhibition will include works by artists from 23 countries sel ected by 18 curators including Martin Barnes of London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, who will choose pieces from the UK and Ireland; Natasha Egan, the executive director at the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago, who will fly the flag for the US and Canada. The UK-based scholar Zelda Cheatle is the chief curator of the exhibition.

Lectures, symposiums and workshops will run alongside the show, which is organised under the auspices of the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award, a major prize which launched in 2011.

The Dubai Photo Exhibition coincides with the tenth edition of Art Dubai (16-19 March) at the Madinat Jumeirah and the Global Art Forum, Art Dubai’s platform for debate on issues surrounding contemporary art.
