Milan fair pleases the crowds

The 21st edition of MiArt (8-10 April) benefited from a few years of thoughtful organisation by the fair’s outgoing director, Vincenzo de Bellis. De Bellis leaves the Milan fair (to be a curator at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis) in a good position. A decent proportion (around 25%) of the fair’s 140 exhibitors also show on the international fair circuit and its varied sections were meaningfully chosen. In general, blue-chip works sell best at this busy fair, particularly those by Italy’s Modern masters, though trade was muted. There were signs that a growing contemporary art scene outside the fair was beginning to influence buyers inside: several of Jonas Lund’s works sold to Italian collectors (through Steve Turner gallery, price range $3,500-$10,000).
