January 1992 saw the first issue of Studies in Modern Art, published by the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The title of the first issue is American Art of the 1960s. Edited by John Elderfield, director of the department of drawings and curator in the paintings department, this annual publication will include essays by members of the museum’s staff and outside scholars. The subject of the first issue relates to MOMA’s collection of American art of the 1960s and its exhibition activities during that decade. Items in the first issue include an interview with Robert Venturi and articles on Jasper Johns’s “Ale Cans” lithographs and Jim Dine’s performance art. The journal is funded for three years by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
